Blind dates: do’s and don’ts

Have you ever gone on a blind date? Then you know that it can sometimes be awkward. But don’t worry, our do’s and don’ts will have you covered!

  • Gather information

Sometimes, a bit of online research can be a good thing. This way, you’ll get a better idea of who they are and if you have similar interests. And, you may also avoid disappointments, such as finding out that he or she is married.

  • Talk beforehand

Chat on social media or talk on the phone. If you find out that you don’t agree on things that are important to you, or you don’t feel comfortable talking to each other, it may not be worth going on a date.

  • Get a description

Send your date a message before you meet and ask what colour shirt they are wearing and what their hair looks like. You can even agree on a sign, like a flower or certain newspaper on the table. That will make it easier to spot them in a crowd of strangers.

  • Think of what to talk about

Sitting across from someone you barely know can make talking a bit difficult. To avoid awkward pauses, think about questions to ask and things to chat about before you arrive.

  • Let a friend know

To stay on the safe side, let a friend know who you are with and where you are going. Have them check in on you after a little while, and let them know once you are back home after your date.

  • Lie

This rule should go for any date, but with a stranger, you might be more tempted to make yourself and your life sound more interesting. But, if things go well, they will find out eventually that you weren’t telling the truth.

Besides, if they are not attracted to the real you, they aren’t worth dating anyway.

  • Meet at your place

Try to meet and have the date in a public place. Being around other people keeps you safe. You can meet in a bar or a restaurant, or go watch a movie together. Avoid going to their place or having them come to yours until you get to know each other better.

  • Drink too much

Alcohol can make things easier by calming your nerves, but it can also cloud your judgement. And that can be dangerous when you are out with someone you don’t know.

  • Go mute

Reach out to the person after your date. Even if you didn’t like them, don’t leave them waiting. It’s okay if it didn’t ‘click’, but politely let them know that there won’t be a second date.
